How to Say Thank You After an Interview
One of the most common questions we get from clients is how to write a thank you email after an interview or other professional interaction. Of course, you have to find and use your own voice, but we have provided some well-received examples that you can edit and play with to meet your needs. Check out this real example that resulted in a job offer!
Thank You Email Example: After an Interview
Hi Dr. Dillon,
It was such a pleasure to meet you today. I was really excited to learn about the potential of collaborating with you on future projects. The opportunity of working with you alongside Dr. Johnson makes me feel like [company name] could be a really snug fit. Thanks for your time and energy (especially at the very end of the day)!
All my best,
Sinead
The goal here is to express your continued interest in the position and company and to confirm that they had a positive impact on you. Any phrases about how you feel that this could be “the right fit” or mentioning the “strength of our mutual fit” are key. You want it to be clear that this hire is to benefit THEM, first and foremost (not you).
You should mention something specific that you discussed or that happened in the interview to both to show that they were memorable and that this is not a canned thank you email. If you were touched by something or felt very strongly connected to anything, feel free to share that here too. See another example here that worked to get this client an offer!
Hi Jamal,
It was such a pleasure to meet you and your team this week. Thanks so much for taking the time to interview me.
I felt deeply connected with the authentic spirit and the values of your team. I connected to the way you and your colleagues spoke about equity and access beliefs and practices, the creative and thoughtful ways you've worked to increase accessibility, and the way you all have built such a palpable sense of community at a large organation like [company name]. These pieces say a lot about the company.
I was really excited to learn more about [company name] and get a better feel for everything. The opportunity of working with such an energetic, thoughtful team alongside you and your colleagues makes me feel like [company name] could be strong fit.
I’ll be sure to reach out to you and/or the other team members if I have any additional questions in the coming weeks.
All my best,
Monica
Thank You Email After a Job Chat or Informational Interview
It’s important to say “thanks” after anyone takes time out of their busy schedule for you—here is an example of a real client’s thank you note. The important piece of the job chat cycle is to always ask for another person’s contact info so that you can keep the chain going. You are much more likely to get a response from someone who has “connected” or “referred” you. Another strategy re: "I enjoyed our conversation - particularly when you spoke about X. Asking “can you point me in the direction of someone who can speak to that specific thing more?" The goal is that you don't want them to do any work about who to refer you to if possible.
Hi Sanjay,
Thanks so much for taking the time to speak to me today about your career history and your current work at [company name]. I really appreciate your time—it was incredibly helpful. As I continue my research, I was wondering—can you think of anyone who would be a good person for me to talk to next about [job title or company name]? I appreciate any guidance you have to offer!
All my best,
Aaron
Check-in on Status Follow Up: When you Haven’t Heard From Your Interviewer in 2-3 weeks
Here your goal is just to tap the recruiter or employer to let them know you’re interested and looking forward to their response. You don’t want to be annoying, of course, but you do want to check-in. Here is a real example that resulted in a quick response from the hiring manager:
Hi Ming,
I hope your week is going well—I wanted to reach out to you to check in on the status of my application for the [job title] position. Let me know if you need any additional information from me at this point and I will be happy to accommodate.
Thanks and looking forward to hearing from you,
Daphne
